Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi, also known as the Father of the Nation, was a great leader of India. He is called Bapu, out of love by Indians.

He was born on October 2nd in 1896 at Porbandar. A long time ago the British invaded and took over India and made it a British colony. Indians opposed and wanted freedom. Gandhi led the freedom struggle.

Gandhi  did not believe in violence and he did not use swords and guns to fight the British. Instead he did peaceful  marches, made requests, and fasted to get the British to give Indians their rights. The peaceful fasts were called satyagraha.

Finally, on August 15,1947 the British gave Indians their independence. But on January 30,1948 Gandhi was shot dead when he was praying. His teachings were followed by Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther king Jr and many others.
