The Oscar is also known as the Academy Award of Merit. It was first given in 1929. The Oscar is given by the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Science every year to encourage excellency in film making and recognize outstanding achievements.
The award is a statue designed by Cedric Gibbons and sculpted by George Stanley. The statue was made of a material called Britannium. The statue looks like a knight standing on a film roll, holding a crusader sword in his hand. The statue is 8.5 pounds and 13.5 inches long. When the librarian Margret Herricks saw the statue, she said it looked like her uncle Oscar!
